IORA Webinar on Seawater Desalination and Multipurpose Utilization in the Indian Ocean Region
02 December 2025 – The Webinar on “Seawater Desalination and Multipurpose Utilization in the Indian Ocean Region” was held on 26 November 2025. It was organized by the Indian Ocean Rim Association Regional Centre for Science and Technology Transfer (IORA RCSTT) Coordination Center for Desalination Technologies at ISDMU, Ministry of Natural Resources, China, in close cooperation with the IORA RCSTT Organizing Committee for the project “Comprehensive Study on Dual Purpose Desalination (Simultaneous Desalination and Salt Production).”
The webinar brought together participants from IORA Member States and Dialogue Partners, including policymakers, researchers, technical experts, and private-sector representatives working on water management, desalination, and sustainable development. Discussions focused on innovative and energy-efficient desalination technologies, sustainable brine management and resource recovery, policy frameworks, financing models, and opportunities for enhanced regional cooperation.
The initiative supports IORA’s efforts to strengthen regional knowledge sharing and promote sustainable water management. Participants exchanged experiences on areas for joint research, pilot projects, technology transfer, and institutional collaboration across the Indian Ocean region.
Key outcomes included a deeper understanding of technological and environmental aspects of desalination, enhanced expert networks, and preliminary recommendations to inform future regional guidelines and cooperation activities on sustainable desalination and multipurpose seawater utilization.
